Todo List #8, Housekeeping

Welcome to the new home of YAGS… at the same URL. Unfortunately, tumblr doesn’t make it easy to change the “master” tumblr associated with an account, and I felt weird having @bobcgames be subservient to @yags-game… so here we are.

I’ve reblogged almost all of the content from the original tumblr (just missing the first three posts, I think?) and re-tagged everything, so there shouldn’t be too much of a difference once we settle in here.

In any case, there’s actually not much work left to do on YAGS. My main goal with the next build is to stage in music with placeholders, so I’m ready to go once the final tracks come in. Of course, there will also be work to replace sprites and backgrounds as those come in.

  • More impact on scenes and choices from personality
  • Add more collectibles (aiming for a total of 333)
  • Stage music for the entire game
  • Replace sprites with new ones
  • Replace backgrounds with new ones

The BTS book is also mostly done at this point, minus filling in sprites for asthetics, but I should also work on finishing that up.

Todo List #7

The goal is more cleanup:

  • Update RenPy version
  • Make sure sprites wear the appropriate accessories in epilogues
  • More oogling of Jake, Nikhil, and Dan if you find them attractive
  • More impact on scenes and choices from personality
  • Clean up banter with Jake and Nikhil
  • Add a character profile for Janet
  • More happy dreams if/when you’re not dating anyone
  • Attempt to add a link to immediately show collectible descriptions when you find one

And, of course, as they come in…

  • Replace sprites with new ones
  • Replace backgrounds with new ones

I have no illusions that I’ll get all of this done in the next build, but this represents the remainder of the active work items I have for the game.

Plus I need to continue work on the BTS book, but that’s something I can do more easily over break.

Todo List #6

The name of the game is cleanup. I will probably also get more assets (backgrounds and sprites) that I’ll start plugging into the game as they come in, which are non-trivial efforts, but also not really predictable.

  • Continue to condense dialogue blocks to reduce number of clicks
  • Stick figure sprites should support epilogue extra accessories
  • Cleanup of character profile code
  • Allow MC to join Nikhil/Jake banter
  • More immediate feedback after making hotness selections for all the guys
  • Option to turn off body hair (really only matters for realistic sprites)

And, of course, as they come in…

  • Replace sprites with new ones
  • Replace backgrounds with new ones

I’m also starting work on the behind-the-scenes PDF book that I want to offer as a premium item with the game. Learning Scribus has been surprisingly straightforward, but I guess that’s generally on the todo list as well.

Todo List #5

I’m expecting to have the finished Adam sprite this weekend (and certainly next week, if not), so the next release will be focused on getting him into the game. (Essentially, replacing every “show adam” command in the game with either “showsp adam” or “showexp adam” and testing the results. There’s almost 1100 such commands, so I have my work cut out for me; thank god for lint.)

  • Replace Adam sprites in game with final sprite.
  • Continue to condense dialogue blocks to reduce number of clicks. 
  • Add additional features to character profiles.
  • Allow MC to pay for food in group outings.

If the theme song gets finished, I’ll stick it in as well. Might be a little jarring to have music only on the title screen, but that’s what the sound settings in preferences are for, I guess. 🙂

Todo List #4

The goal of the next release is to get the remaining backend changes in place.

  • Write and test new sprite system. *
  • Fix achievements.
  • Finish character profiles.
  • More GUI tweaks.
  • More Leigh/Ashleigh/Steve scenes.
  • Continue to condense dialogue blocks to reduce number of clicks. 
  • Studying (or failing to do so) should have a larger impact on conversations and choices. **

* The amount of work here will depend somewhat on whether (and when) I get sprites from my sprite artist. If I get them somewhat soon, I want to actually start replacing sprites in the game with the next release. We shall see.

** Yes, this is back again. I failed at doing it last time.

Music is also in progress now, as I’ll be posting shortly. With luck, I’ll have a theme song by the next update I can throw in on the title screen.

Todo List #3

Next focus is probably getting the rest of the GUI together and continuing to do minor cleanups to the dialogue. There are a few larger changes I’m looking at, but I need to see how difficult some of the changes will be first.

  • Finish title screen and menu GUI changes, and tweak gameplay GUI.
  • Add in-game character profiles.
  • Continue to condense dialogue blocks to reduce number of clicks.
  • Change endings slightly based on different friendship/attraction levels with guys. (Alone ending, bad guy endings.)
  • Add more conversations with parents in later parts of the game.
  • Studying (or failing to do so) should have a larger impact on conversations and choices.
  • Investigate integration with the achievements framework for major events.

Todo List #2

I think I’ve ironed out a lot of the particularly weird parts of the game. There’s more I still want to do there, but I want to take a step back and throw some work into the GUI for a bit. TODOs for my own tracking purposes:

  • Finalize the new name for the game. (Hoping to keep the acronym YAGS, but I want a name that emphasizes the story more than the dating.)
  • Continue to condense dialogue blocks to reduce number of clicks.
  • Finish up GUI for dialogue and core gameplay, and start on GUI changes for menus and the title screen.
  • “Finalize” numbers for different endings (good vs bad endings, friendship rewards), as all good endings are currently set at trivially-achievable values.
  • Add an additional opportunity to get on James’ good side.
